The pub was very popular during the reign of Charles 1who lost his head although surfeit of ale.During the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries these establishments primarily sold beer and ale, until the first half of the eighteenth century when the so-called ‘Gin Craze’ took hold, especially amongst the poorer classes as the production of gin had increased to six times that of beer. The 1751 Gin Act forced gin makers to sell only to licensed premises and put drinking establishments under the control of local magistrates
The Kings Head is Guildford’s oldest and most haunted pub. Constructed in the late 1500s it was built in the traditional manner using timber beams. Located in the historic Saxon market town of Guildford it is situated next to the Castle, in the town’s conservation area. In 1972 the pub was granted a Grade ll listing reflecting its status as one of the oldest buildings in Guildford.
Today the Kings Head continues to be a lively town centre pub offering great home cooked food, a diverse range of drinks including four real ales, outside seating and a happy warm welcome.
