Technically not in London, but in Ely, the Mitre is both a London institution and, for many, a well kept secret. You will want to find it, and once you have you won’t want to share it. It’s not big enough to share anyway. Two tiny wood panelled rooms and snug sandwich a bar that is just big enough to rustle up a cheese toastie for those drinkers who really do insist on a touch of gastronomy. If you go to the Mitre, however, it’s not to eat. This is a drinkers pub. Heaven knows there are few enough of those left.

To search over 250 cottages near it.I have visited many restruants in this area and this is as good as any. beautiful location, excellent service and a very good standard of food at a fair but not cheap price but worth every extra penny. the Cambridge evening news food critic gave it a great reveiw and I have to agree.

In the late 18th century, Lord Horatio Nelson purchased a property just up the road (still known as Nelson House) and he regularly visited the docks to inspect the gun until his death at the glorious battle of Trafalgar in 1805.

Lord Nelson and the gun would frequently meet regularly Lady Emma Hamilton in an upstairs room (now called the River Room) for their secret assignment.

The gun also has a long association with smugglers landing site and distribution via a hidden tunnel. To date there is still a secret peephole in the circular staircase to watch "The Revenue Men".

As the banks of the island prospered as the Docks to become the local pub for dock workers, stevedores and boatmen.

THE GUN TODAY
In 2001 a devastating fire destroyed much of the interior of the old building and the pub was closed for three years. Then, the current owners and brothers Tom and Ed Martin Acquired the scene and spent about nine months meticulously restoring class II listed building beautiful in close consultation with Heritage Italiano. Tom and Ed King, opened in 2004 and owned and operated since then, the critically acclaimed Gun significantly.

The Gun now has a 40 cover dining room in the main bar, back bar with two pins, two private dining rooms and a fabulous terrace that seats Riverside 50. There is also an outdoor patio cover 80 to the right of the barrel which is open from May to September for summer drinks and barbecues was fantastic and the private parties. The area of ‘long acre’, has been a recognized thoroughfare since Saxon times and in roman times connected Westminster to the city of London. During the reign of King John (1199-1256) Long acre was recorded as the northern boundary of the Covent Garden of the monks of St Peter’s Abbey. Over the years the area has been home to royalty, cart wrights and fritterers and to famous names such as Nicolas stone the sculptor, Oliver Cromwell and John Dryden. Today the area is still a bustling hub of activity connecting Covent Garden to Leicester Square.

This is another one done up by the Original Pub Co. Saying that, it hasn't changed much - its still full of obnoxious types who work in the area (and spill out onto the pavement once the weather gets better) and the unsuspecting tourist. Like most pubs in the area, it's chocker at quitting time and evenings but dead in the afternoons

All aboard the ‘orrible omnibus for a ride around the dark side of London. The Ghost Bus Tours’ classic Routemaster has been redesigned to give passengers London’s first ‘Fright Bus’ service. On-board actors and technical trickery combine to create the scariest tour in town. A creepy conductor provides the commentary for this sinister sightseeing show, revealing haunted palaces, unmarked burial grounds and the skeletons in the capital’s cupboard.

The Ghost Bus Tour takes you around the City, West End and even goes south of the river.
Tours depart from Northumberland Avenue which is just off of Trafalgar Square. The Bus stop is outside the Grand Hotel, nearest tubes are Charing Cross and Embankment.
All tours are subject to availability please check the dates you wish to travel to make sure they are available.

The Ghost Bus Tours - The Necropolis Bus Company

Earth to earth…

The Necropolis Bus Company began in the 19th century as a private funeral bus service. The Necropolis vehicles or ‘Carcass Coaches’ as they were known to Londoners were able to convey the deceased, pall bearers and up to 50 mourners (no standing) to the final resting place. Each bus had an onboard conductor/chief mourner and a special siren or ‘mourning whistle’ to warn pedestrians of the bus’s approach. The sound of the whistle prompted gentlemen to remove their hats and bow their heads as a mark of passing respect.

Ashes to Ashes…

Regular service ran until 1967 when a tragic fire at the company depot in South Dulstead razed the building to the ground and destroyed almost the entire fleet of buses. Only one vehicle was salvaged from the ashes and was locked in a storage facility for 40 years. It has now been restored to its original design and is operated by NECROBUS as a sightseeing service in central London.

Bus to Bus

The bus is painted in the company’s traditional colour of midnight black. The interior seating is arranged in ‘railway style’ for comfort and so that passengers can grieve openly and offer condolences to each other. Decorative features include lamps and window curtains, which were always drawn if a coffin was stored in the vehicle overnight. This is based on the superstition that a departed spirit might be trapped by its own reflection in the glass and would be unable to pass on to the other world. It also helped to keep the bodies cool in the summer months.

The very name of this pub is the part of the fabric of British History And reaches back to Robert Cecil, the first Earl of A Salisbury who is said to have been the wisest man in Tudor Polities .The most important thing to note here is that--- The Salisbury has the distinction of holding the Platinum Award in recognition of quality of its beer. The interior is a wonder of etched glass, mirrors and mahogany. Coupled with some charming ornate art Noumea light fittings, you begin to appreciate there aren't many of these once commonplace pubs left in such good nick.The third Marquis of Salisbury. Queen Victoria"s favorite Prime Minister ,from whom the site of tavern was orinally leased in 1892..Prior to this the pub had been known as the Coach& Horses and Ben Count"s headland famous for promoting price fighting.

Food: Sub-standard. Cold, undercooked chips. Compressed, factory burgers loaded with garlic. Tomatoes grown and subsequently sliced way too long before they are served. The pub has many original features including acarved oak and special attention should be paid to the beautifully carved , ornate red ceiling.Due perhaps to its prime location its more of a vertical drinking den and gets very busy at usual times, with service suffering as a result. he Ostrich Inn was once by the Jarmans, a husband and wife who would murder their guests by dropping them through a trapdoor in a bedroom, plunging them into a vat of boiling liquid and, ultimately, their deaths. There have recently been reports of strange occurences, possibly the ghosts of murdered ghosts trapped within the walls of the pub. A detailed history of the Ostrich Inn, by one G. Daniel, titled The Ostrich Inn, Colnbrook, Bucks: Its Place in History, apparently appeared in 1969, but there is no copy in the British Library and I have not been able to lay my hands on one elsewhere.

There has been a pub here since 1666, when this was the main road out of London.The pub changed name in 1700 to THE GREAT TREE than same time before 1800 back to the George.
Used to be a Rat & Parrot (S&N Retail) for a few years until 2004, now a "Taylor Walker" branded pub, a name confusingly reinstated by Spirit.
The bar is built for high traffic with wood and flagstone flooring, perfect for the many football fans locally as there are plenty of screens. It's got decent beer although only Deuchars was on when we were in last and very tasty it was on a sunny afternoon. Friendly and efficient staff and a promising menu.

The pub has an elegant Regency-style frontage and dates back to 1775.

It once served the Floral Tea Gardens, on 18^th Century tourist attraction. It was the last jail between the old jail at Notting Hill and Hangman’s gallows at Marble Arch .Legend says that the cart transporting the condemned men would often stop here so that the prisoner could have the last Drink before been taken to Gallows and this was where the saying”onc for the road” and “he is on wagon” come from.

On a happier note, we are now renowned for the excellent food we serve from our own menu which includes many homemade dishes and a daily Carvery. The Kings Head is Guildford’s oldest and most haunted pub. Constructed in the late 1500s it was built in the traditional manner using timber beams. Located in the historic Saxon market town of Guildford it is situated next to the Castle, in the town’s conservation area. All on one level, this open plan venue has wooden floors in the main bar. The clientele is mainly tourist orientated but there are a few locals who come in on a regular basis. I first visited this pub in the 2008 before I had moved to London but often visited friends in the area. This pub has wonderful novelty of having a theatre underneath it.

The interior of the pub has a theatrical theme and was renamed in honor of the Barons Court Theater which is located in the basement. if i say its remarkable for its inner decoration i was not wrong same public vies i got after visited here .

The inbuilt theater has about 60 seats that surrounded by archways on the three sides the playing area is very small what i noticed and whole is surrounded by archways on the three sides where the audience sits. About mean i simply say as Punjabi man an enjoyable place to grab pint of ale or a delicious meal.

Like many pub theaters that are located upstairs or in the back room, the Barons Court Theatre is located in the cellar/vaults below the Curtains Up Pub. It has been around for about 16 years (but looks like it has been there forever).

The theatre has about 60 seats that surround the stage on three sides. The playing area is an intimatel square surrounded by archways on the three sides where the audience sits. Sometimes the directors use the audience space as playing area (for example in their production of Antigone, the chorus sat in the front row of the audience. The theatre has a very intimate feel. You can look the actors right in the eye (in fact one winked at me during a show recently).

The artistic director at Barons Court is Ron Phillips. He produces about 70% classics and 30% new works. His focus in selecting productions is plays that will entertain (rather than focusing on a particular genre).

The Curtains Up pub is a fairly upscale place that can get quite packed on the weekends. It is also an enjoyable place to grab an ale or a meal before the show (they have a restaurant in the back and you can book a table by ringing 020 7386 7543).

The area between London Bridge and Tower Bridge on the south side of the Thames is managed by the London Bridge Business Improvement District (BID) Company. The old

London bridge is remarkable for its history and beauty.

The current London Bridge is often shown in films, news and documentaries showing the throng of commuters journeying to work into The City from London Bridge Station (south to north). A recent example of this is actor Hugh Grant crossing the bridge north to south during the morning rush hour, in the 2002 film About a Boy.

e lets Londoners and New Yorkers see each other in real time.

In all its optical brilliance and brass and wood, there stood the Telectroscope: an 11.2-meter-(37 feet) long by 3.3-meter-(11 feet) tall dream of a device allowing people on one side of the Atlantic to look into its person-size lens and, in real time, see those on the other side via a recently completed tunnel running under the ocean. (Think 19th-century Webcam. Or maybe Victorian-age video phone.)

And all the credit goes to British artist Paul St. George. If he had not been rummaging through great-grandpa Alexa

nder’s personal effects a few years ago, the Telectroscope might still exist only on paper, hidden away deep inside some old box.

But fortunately, St. George could not bear that thought and thus decided he should be the one to finish what his great-grandfather had started. It was quite simply the right thing to do. Plus, it would make a pretty cool public art exhibit. Send us your videos, images or stories

unnel is really a trans-Atlantic broadband network rounded off on each end with HD cameras, according to Tiscali, an Italian Internet provider handling the technical side of the project.

As for the Telectroscope, well, it was a fanciful idea that, according to St. George, came about from a typo made by a 19th-century reporter who misspelled Electroscope, a device used to measure electrostatic charges - as Telectroscope.

“The journalist also misunderstood what it was about and wrote in the article that it was a device for the suppression of absence,” St. George said. “The accidental hope captured their imagination, and lots of people at the end of the 19th century thought it was a great idea.”

The Telectroscope captured St. George’s imagination five years ago, when he began pondering how to do a project on the childh

ood fantasy of digging a hole to the opposite side of the Earth. And because the artist also happens to have an expertise in Victorian chronophotography — a precursor to cinematography — he had a slight idea of where to look for the proper equipment.

“We all have that idea in our head if we could make a tunnel to the other side of the Earth,” St. George said.”But we are not all crazy enough to actually try and do it.”

St. George was crazy enough to actually try and do it, but he realized he could not do the digging alone. So about two years ago, he p

itched the idea to Artichoke, the British arts group responsible for taking the Sultan’s Elephant — a 42-ton mechanical creature — for a stroll through central London in 2006. The company was immediately taken by St. George’s idea.

“The whole thing is about seeing what is real and what isn’t real and how the world is,” said Nicki Webb, a co-founder of Artichoke. “Is it nighttime when we are in daytime, and does it look familiar to us or not?”

When the sun illuminated the lens of the Telectroscope next to the Thames, it was, of course, still nighttime in New York. So the screen inside the scope broadcast back only an empty sidewalk silently framed by the Brooklyn B

ridge and the Manhattan skyline.

But then something miraculous occurred.

A police officer and a street cleaner walked into the frame. Stopped. And waved.

The Globe Theater is a faithful reconstruction of the open-air playhouse first built in 1599, where Shakespeare worked and for which he wrote many of his greatest plays. The Globe Theater is just a 5 min walking from London Bridge

on the Thames river. One can ask by any passerby he will guide you ,if u fail to catch the way to reach The Globe . If can you imagine the old time what you have seen in old movies or pictures you will find same thing or if i can say its beyond the our imagination iam not wrong.

“Totus mundus agit histrionem” is thought to have been the motto of

the first Globe. It spoke of a gloriously robust Elizabethan ambition, a desire to brook no boundaries in the new playhouse”s field of imagination. It is an ambition which has been taken up by reconstructed Globe. Within its open and expensive architecture , fired up by energy and excitement of its unquenchable audience , the new Globe has respected no limits to what its aims to archive.

No one stretched that ambition further than Shakespeare, and this year we celebrate the glorious untruly diversity

of his work In the form and in content, he was never content to rest, never tempted to repeat himself , always searching to kick his muse awake by taking the new corner of human heart , and encasing its new form. This year when i visited in London i see great play of Shakespeare king Lear:, his most wild inventive comedy , “A Midsummer Night”s Dream “. his most thrilling and savage satire, Timon of Athens and his invention of new form , the sit-corm, in The Merry Wives of Windsor.
